Nick Dubecki was born in Brantford, Ontario in 1955 where he lived until moving to Toronto to attend York University and remained until 1996. He has since lived in Philadelphia, PA, St. John’s, NL, and now resides in Sudbury, Ontario.
I bought my first SLR in 1973 and have worked in Photography, Lithography, and Serigraphy for over 40 years. I began working with digital imaging equipment professionally in 1979, and have seen this evolve from an elite, highly specialized field to one that is available to most everyone. For the past 18 years I have been offering my expertise in photography, scanning, retouching, and printing (with a 44″ Ultrachrome printer) to artists in the St. John’s and Sudbury communities.
Visual experience is often at odds with logic. A landform that seems so large on approach as it appears over the near horizon will shrink dramatically when closeness eliminates or changes context. As physically precise as they are, camera and lens do not capture subjective visual experience.
I describe my works as “photo-based digital images” rather than photographs because they are assemblages of multiple images from the camera rectified to reflect my own visual experience.
